How to Open a PDF in Google Docs (Drive Convert Method)

Updated 2026-09-06 · DocsAll Guides

Quick answer: Upload the PDF to Google Drive → right-click the file → Open with → Google Docs. Google converts it into an editable document automatically.

Steps

  1. Go to drive.google.com, click New → File upload and pick your PDF
  2. Right-click the uploaded PDF in the file list
  3. Choose Open with → Google Docs
  4. A new tab opens with the converted, editable document (your original PDF stays untouched)

Which PDFs convert well?

  • Text-based PDFs (Word exports, web printouts): body text converts cleanly
  • Simple single-column reports and essays: paragraphs and headings mostly survive

Which convert badly?

  • Scanned/image-only PDFs: the page is one picture — you get an image in the doc, no text. OCR first.
  • Multi-column or table-heavy layouts: column order can scramble; tables fall apart into loose text
  • Exotic fonts and display faces: substituted with default fonts

A more reliable alternative

When the conversion mangles your layout, use a dedicated converter: PDF to Word runs entirely in your browser (no upload), and the .docx result imports cleanly into Google Drive or opens in Word.

For scanned pages, run text recognition first: Image OCR turns scanned pages into selectable text.

FAQ

Where did my images go? Images usually survive but may shift position; complex layouts are better served by a dedicated converter.

Why is there no "Open with" option? Make sure you right-clicked the PDF file itself (not a preview) and you are signed in.
