Word Page Numbers: Start at 1 After the Cover and TOC
Updated 2026-09-19 · DocsAll Guides
Quick answer: Page numbering control lives in section breaks: insert a Next Page section break between front matter and body, unlink the footer, then set each section's numbering independently. Open Word to PDF — everything runs in your browser, and files never leave your device.
Steps
- Place the cursor at the very start of the body → Layout → Breaks → Next Page section break.
- Double-click the body footer → turn off "Link to Previous".
- Page Number → Format Page Numbers → Start at 1.
- Insert page numbers; delete them from the cover section.
Important notes
- "Link to Previous" is the classic trap: while linked, edits in one section overwrite the other.
- Section breaks are visible with formatting marks on (Ctrl+Shift+8) — deleting the wrong one merges sections and scrambles numbering.
- For Roman-numeral front matter: set the front section to I, II, III and the body to 1, 2, 3.

TOC numbers still wrong Update the entire TOC field; if it stays wrong, the headings lack real styles — fix styles first.

Pro tips
Print-oriented documents benefit from a final layout pass in Print Preview before converting: page-break positions, header repetition, and image quality are all fixed permanently once in PDF. Checking them in Word first costs two minutes; discovering them in the PDF costs a full re-export cycle.
