How to Recover an Unsaved Word Document
Updated 2026-09-19 · DocsAll Guides
Quick answer: After a crash or accidental close, Word usually shows a Document Recovery pane on restart. If not, go to File → Info → Manage Document → Recover Unsaved Documents, or look for .asd files in %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Word. Open Word to PDF — everything runs in your browser, and files never leave your device.
Steps
- Reopen Word — if a Document Recovery pane appears, pick the latest version.
- Otherwise: File → Info → Manage Document → Recover Unsaved Documents.
- Manual hunt: type %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Word\ in the file explorer address bar and sort by date for .asd/.wbk files.
- Save the recovered file immediately under a proper name.
Important notes
- AutoRecover snapshots every 10 minutes by default — cut it to 1-5 minutes in File → Options → Save for important work.
- Unsaved versions are kept for only 4 days before cleanup.
- After a hard power loss, the first Word launch after reboot has the best recovery odds — do not clean temp files first.
Common questions
The .asd file will not open by double-clicking Open it via Word's File → Open dialog instead — the extension is not associated with Word by default.
The recovered version is missing recent edits AutoRecover only keeps periodic snapshots; anything typed after the last snapshot is gone — the reason to shorten the interval.
Pro tips
Print-oriented documents benefit from a final layout pass in Print Preview before converting: page-break positions, header repetition, and image quality are all fixed permanently once in PDF. Checking them in Word first costs two minutes; discovering them in the PDF costs a full re-export cycle.
