How to Highlight a PDF (and Why It Shows the Same Everywhere)

Updated 2026-09-19 · DocsAll Guides

Quick answer: The PDF Edit tool stamps semi-transparent color blocks onto pages. Unlike reader annotations that live in a separate layer, these highlights are baked into the page content — they look identical in every PDF viewer. Open PDF Edit & Annotate — everything runs locally in your browser, and files never leave your device.

Steps

  1. Upload the PDF and choose "Highlight" mode.
  2. Set page, coordinates (default 200×20 points fits one text line), and color.
  3. Keep the opacity moderate — default semi-transparency lets the text show through.
  4. Download; repeat for each line you want marked.

Important notes

  • Mark line by line instead of one giant block — far more readable.
  • For a second line, subtract the line height (≈14-16 pt) from the Y coordinate.
  • Works on scanned pages too — everything is an image there, the block just sits on top.

Common questions

Can I remove a highlight later? Not individually — keep the original file and produce a freshly annotated copy.

Reader vs baked-in highlights? Reader annotations may not show in other apps; baked-in ones display everywhere — send those when the recipient's toolchain is unknown.
