Where Blank Pages Come From
Scanned documents are particularly prone to blank pages. Common causes:
- The back side is blank paper during duplex scanning
- Blank separator pages in the original get scanned together
- The scanner feeds an extra sheet
- Separator blank pages inserted between files during merging
These blank pages take up file size, disrupt reading continuity, and waste paper when printing — they should be removed.
Which "Blank Pages" Should Be Deleted
- Completely blank pages: pure white, no content at all
- Nearly blank pages: only minimal noise, visually indistinguishable
- Separator blank pages: intentionally added during merging, can be deleted
But note: some pages that "look empty" actually have content, such as stamp pages, signature page blanks, and handwritten note pages — don't delete them by mistake.
Two Ways to Delete Blank Pages
Manual Deletion
Flip through the file, note the page numbers of blank pages, and use the PDF Delete Pages tool to enter the page numbers for deletion. Suitable for files with few pages — accurate but time-consuming.
Automatic Tool Detection
Some tools can automatically detect blank pages and delete them in batches. The principle is to analyze page pixels — pages that are all white or nearly all white are judged as blank. Suitable for scanned documents with tens or hundreds of pages.
Pitfalls of Automatic Detection
Threshold Settings
"How white is considered white" is a threshold issue. Too strict, and scanned pages with slight noise won't be deleted; too loose, and content with light stamps or pale backgrounds will be mistakenly deleted. It's recommended to preview the detection results first and confirm before deleting.
Misjudging Pages with Content
Some pages have very little content (such as just a header line or a page number) and may be misjudged as blank. After automatic detection, be sure to manually spot-check a few pages.
Scan Noise Interference
Scanned documents often have background noise, and strict all-white detection will miss deletions. For tools with adjustable thresholds, increase the noise tolerance first.
Correct Steps for Deleting Pages
- Upload the file using the PDF Delete Pages tool
- Enter the page numbers to delete (manually noted or automatically detected)
- Preview the result after deletion, confirm page count and content
- Download the cleaned file
- Keep a backup of the original file, and only delete the original after confirming everything is correct
Preventing Blank Pages During Scanning
Prevention at the source is easier than cleanup afterward:
- Use software that supports "skip blank pages" for duplex scanning
- Check originals before scanning, remove separator paper
- Use a scanner with feed detection to reduce extra sheet feeding
- Review immediately after scanning, rescan if blank pages are found
Summary
Deleting blank pages isn't hard — the difficulty lies in accurate identification. For few pages, manual deletion is most reliable; for many pages, use automatic detection but be sure to spot-check. Keep a backup before deleting, verify page count after deleting, and avoid mistakenly deleting pages with content. The DocsAll Delete Pages tool processes in the browser, so documents that may contain sensitive information like scanned files are safer without uploading.
